A light uncovers
This morning, on my way to work, I was driving along a mountain stretch that would take me down into the valley to reach my office.
As I drove I admired the view opening onto a valley that, at that very moment, was filled with white, a cloud that seemed to be resting between the mountains. Nothing of the town below could be seen, but the sun was above these mountains and above this cloud. The sun reflected on this white blanket, making it look like a nice glass of soft whipped cream.
As I got further down, I found myself inside the blanket of fog that, a few kilometres earlier, had even made my mouth water.
That fog forced me to slow down, to be careful because I could no longer see anything. That pleasure had turned into heaviness, like when you gulp down something delicious that then gives you a stomach ache.
After that descent, and then in that blanket of fog, I reflected on how light brings out the darkest things, and how staying inside darkness keeps the light from reaching you. It was a question of position: I could have chosen to stay on the higher stretch and come down when the cloud had cleared from the valley. But I had to go through all that to get to work. One thing above all came to mind, that verse from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 5: ... He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
I felt exactly that sensation of having weighed good weather and bad, those who enjoy what is good and those who live in wickedness. Of the sun that had risen but with different perspectives, of those who prefer to stay in the sun and those who prefer darkness. Let's say a few logical thoughts were running through my mind, and one in particular kept coming back: the feeling of well-being in the sun, with that delightful view.
A thousand thoughts that couldn't help making me think of my victory in having chosen the Light for my life, and of knowing darkness well too, to the point of avoiding it or being able to recognise it even while in the middle of it.
I don't know how much you are weighing your life and what goes on around you, but a Light brings everything to clarity. Clarity drives darkness away. Darkness is the gloom we sometimes choose to put around us, on us, inside us. Step into the Light, let yourself be enlightened: everything can still be healed.
Inspired by the verse:
Matthew 5:45
That way you will become the true children of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun to shine on bad and good people alike, and gives rain to those who do good and to those who do evil.
